WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Since C.R.C.P. 250 went into effect on July 1, our Office has received a number of inquiries regarding the new Rule Change and how it impacts Mandatory Continuing Legal and Judicial Education. Will the total number of CLE and Ethics hours required each period change? Are inactive attorneys still exempt from the CLE requirements? Are there any exemptions from the CLE requirement? How may I get credit for activities I think are worth CLE, but are not an accredited activity?

Over the next few months, the CLJE Committee and the Office of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education will be providing additional guidance on the rules and regulations for lawyers and judges, as well as for sponsors of CLE activities on our website.

Frequently Asked Questions
We've compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions regarding C.R.C.P. 250 on Mandatory Continuing Legal and Judicial Education. These FAQ's provide answers to these questions, and include direct links to the resources on our website. You can find the FAQ's here: What You Need to Know About the New C.R.C.P. 250 Rule.

LAWYER'S DUTY TO REPORT
We have all made our share of embarrassing mistakes.  Often, the hardest part is admitting it.  If a lawyer makes a mistake, does he or she have a duty to inform the client?  According to a recent American Bar Association ethics opinion, the answer may be yes.

Find out more in this article by Alan Obye, Assistant Regulation Counsel: When Must a Lawyer Inform the Client about the Lawyer's Mistake?

GOT THE SUMMERTIME BLUES?
Despite the beautiful weather, there are many reasons you might be feeling down during the summer months. COLAP, and new Clinical Director Ron Wilcoxson, share four easy tips for getting rid of the summertime blues!

HAVE YOU MENTORED LATELY?
A little over two years ago, on July 1, 2016, Ryann Peyton took over as Director of the Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program (CAMP). Since then, the Program has grown exponentially, and the ABA Standing Committee on Professionalism has taken note.

In June 2018, CAMP was awarded with the E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award. CAMP also launched its newest innovation: Mentoring Circles.

As an innovator in lawyer mentoring, CAMP has modernized its program to allow mentors and mentees to thrive by enabling them to self-organize into groups for their personal and professional development. CAMP Mentoring Circles are the newest way in which Colorado lawyers are finding mentoring opportunities.

Find out more about CAMP's Mentoring Circles here: Mentoring Circles: Enabling Lawyers to Self-Organize For Professional Growth.

WELCOME, NEW ATTORNEYS
The results from the February bar exam led to 177 new attorneys welcomed by the state of Colorado.

Fifty-one percent of applicants passed the February exam, and were honored alongside their family members at the Admissions Ceremony at Boettcher Concert Hall on June 4. A full breakdown of Colorado pass rates can be found on our website:
Bar Examination Results.

The next round of examinees will take the bar exam on July 24 and 25, with the results being posted no earlier than October 4. More information on the upcoming bar exam can be found here: Future Lawyers - Bar Examination.

Congratulations to those who passed the February Bar Exam, and good luck to those taking the exam in July!

Awards
Congratulations to former Attorney Regulation Counsel, Jim Coyle. Jim was the recipient of the 2018 Isaac Hecht Award by the ABA's National Client Protection Organization, and is only the second Colorado lawyer to receive this award since its inception in 2004. The other, Charles Goldberg, received the award in 2011. Jim will also be awarded the Colorado LGBT Bar Association Attorney of the Year award in October 2018.

Susan Gleeson, Director of Examinations, was chosen to receive the 2018 National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) Administrator of the Year Award. The Administrator of the Year Award recognizes exemplary service by a bar admissions administrator, and will be presented to Sue in August 2018 at the NCBE/CBAA Annual Meeting in Asheville, NC.

The Colorado Attorney Mentoring Program was awarded with the E. Smythe Gambrell Professionalism Award. The Standing Committee commended CAMP "...for establishing an innovative and effective program well worthy of emulation throughout the nation." The award will be presented to CAMP at the ABA Annual Meeting on August 3, 2018, in Chicago, IL.

Achievements
Way to go Assistant Regulation Counsel Bryon Large who recently graduated from the 2018 Colorado Bar Association Leadership Training (COBALT) program. Bryon was one of only 20 graduates from this outstanding class. Congratulations, Bryon!

Speaking of COBALT graduates, 2015 graduate and current Assistant Regulation Counsel Catherine "Cat" Shea was sworn in on May 19, 2018 as President of the Colorado Women's Bar Association for a one-year term. Cat recently published her first President's Letter, detailing what's to come in the CWBA's 41st year.

Appointments
Our very own Jonathan White, Professional Development Counsel, has been appointed to the ABA Cybersecurity Task Force as the representative for the Center for Professional Responsibility. The Task Force examines risks posed by criminals, terrorists and nations that hope to steal personal and financial information, disrupt critical infrastructure, and wage a new kind of warfare on a battlefield of ones and zeros.

Congratulations to new COLAP Executive Director, Sarah Myers, and new Clinical Director, Ron Wilcoxson. Ron comes to COLAP with 25 years of experience in the mental health field, and specializes in general mental health issues, substance use disorders, and emergency psychiatric intervention. Most recently, Ron took a sabbatical in 2016 to volunteer with a not-for-profit organization, Kids Saving the Rainforest, in Costa Rica, but now has returned to Colorado to serve as Clinical Director for COLAP.

NON-LAWYER ENJOINED FROM UPL
Non-lawyer Javier Calzada was recently enjoined from the unauthorized practice of law by the Colorado Supreme Court. The order means that Mr. Calzada shall not give legal advice or prepare legal documents for others in the future without the supervision of an attorney.

Mr. Calzada associated with a law firm but was not a licensed attorney. Without permission, Mr. Calzada had business cards made that included English and Spanish information, and inaccurately identified Mr. Calzada as a “bilingual paralegal,” at the firm.

The full press release and a copy of the order can be found here: Javier Martinez Calzada, 17SA216.
